Stochastic waveguide in the lithosphere: Indonesian subduction zone to Australian craton

چکیده
S U M M A R Y Earthquakes occurring in the Indonesian subduction zone recorded in the cratonic regions of northern Australia have long, high frequency coda associated with both P and Swaves. Similar behaviour is seen for earthquakes within Australia on paths within the cratonic regions. The complex character of the coda and its rapid spatial variation indicate that the high frequency waves have travelled within a zone of strong, multiple scattering with very high intrinsic Q . There are subtle variations in the nature of the coda that can be described through a coda Q . The variations in coda are associated with the position along the arc and the nature of the transition from the subduction zone to the continental lithosphere. The character of the coda observations can be captured with numerical simulations in models derived from seismic tomography for northern Australia and the neighbouring subduction zone, incorporating lower crustal and mantle heterogeneity with much longer horizontal than vertical correlation length. High frequency calculations to high frequency (16 Hz) for long propagation distances (up to 1500 km) have been carried out using finite difference modelling on the Earth Simulator. The variations in coda properties can be associated with the way in which the seismic energy gets ducted into the stochastic waveguide associated with the lithosphere. The most efficient transfer occurs where continental lithospheric material is adjacent to the earthquake zone.

Earthquake hazards on the cascadia subduction zone.
Large subduction earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone pose a potential seismic hazard. Very young oceanic lithosphere (10 million years old) is being subducted beneath North America at a rate of approximately 4 centimeters per year. The Cascadia subduction zone shares many characteristics with subduction zones in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, where comparably young oc...

Subduction zones can be regarded as natural laboratories because of the wide variety of processes involved. Macquarie Island is an exposed portion of the Macquarie Ridge, and is located where the Australian plate meets the Pacific plate. To its north is the Tonga trench, where the old Pacific floor subducts at a rapid rate below the Indo-Australia plate, producing a deep slab of former oceanic ...

Analysis of spatial, temporal, geological and geochemical patterns of ophiolites in the Indonesian and New Guinea region indicates a strong correlation with marginal basin development and closure. The spatial distribution of ophiolites is mostly linked with marginal basin producing zones of oblique convergence and collision. Strain partitioning in these zones creates a series of ephemeral plate...

In this dissertation, I investigate the assembly and evolution of the Archean cratonic lithosphere by using two complementary seismological methods to image the lithospheric structure of the Slave craton in Canada. First, I perform surface wave tomographic inversions to constrain the depth dependence of Rayleigh wave phase velocity, shear wave velocity, and azimuthal anisotropy of the Slave cra...

A finite element method with constrained elements and Lagrange multipliers is used to study tectonic faults in a viscous medium. A fault, representing the interface between overriding and subducting plates, has been incorporated into a viscous flow model of a subduction zone in which both thermal buoyancy and the buoyancy associated with the phase change from olivine to spinel are included. The...
